Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) is a miserable mess when his wife leaves him and he decides to throw himself into serious journalism. His personal journey leads him into the path of Lyn Cassady (George Clooney) who opens up a secret world of alternative espionage for a truly outrageous story.
The New Earth Army
As Bob is drawn deeper into the unbelievable reality of top-secret military group the ‘New Earth Army’ he learns about the Warrior Monks that trained in psychic warfare in the early 80s. With Bill Django (Jeff Bridges) leading the early recruits of the ‘Jedi’ army force they attempted to acquire skills ranging from remote viewing to walking through walls.
As Bob and Lyn travel through the dangerous Iraq desert on a covert mission there are insights into the rise of the ‘New Earth Army’. The rivalry between Lyn and insidious fellow warrior monk Larry Hooper (Kevin Spacey) ushered in the end of the special force. This was also the beginning of a more treacherous future for psychic warfare under the manipulation of Hooper.
As the members of the old unit come together at a remote station in the desert Lyn and the ‘Jedi’ soldiers tap into their alternative talents in an attempt to change the future.
Staring at Goats
The ensemble cast of The Men Who Stare at Goats is a star-studded list of outstanding male actors who are used to carrying a film as the lead man. Together they are a force to be admired making the movie a comedic and reminiscent look into very experimental times. Yet amongst all of the leading men who have countless accolades for their acting a group of unknowns capture the audience; the goats manage to hold their own on the big screen as endearing characters.
The film is charming, interesting and humorous with a rolling mirth that carries from scene to scene. The main characters are eccentric and George Clooney, Ewan McGregor and Jeff Bridges are outstanding. The Men Who Stare at Goats is like an hour and a half escape from the monotony of the workweek.
The Men Who Stare at Goats is as much a past reality as it is an exaggeration. Though the story may seem unbelievable in this case truth really is stranger than fiction. The original story is researched and written by Jon Ronson.
